I'm a Christian and happen to think it's pretty incredible that Vinnie and Abe are as well. Where in the Philippines are you located?

it's cool how even with vinnie's talents and success, he still managed to find out what his real source of significance here on earth is. his relationship with God. he's not only ballzy in his playing but also in the way that he shares his beliefs and how openly he lays his true identity flat on the table with no hesitation. when pocket mentioned that they all prayed before the potato gig, i was almost in tears. way to go vinnie! check out vinnie and abe on ron kenoly's album.

I am a Christian also, very flawed still but my Faith is center to who I am and to what I do and why. I happened to be at Pasic 1998 in Florida when Vinnie had just become a Christian and he gets up in front of 800 guys, his first big clinic appearance in years (his own words) and the crowd is awaiting anxiously. Virgil and Steve Smith were sitting right in front of my Wife and I, those two (Donati and Smith) were hanging out together the whole festival. Vinnie comes out and the crowd erupts. He sits down and he just struggles to really get into it. You guys know what I mean. He plays for about 10 to 12 minutes pulls out a few vinnieisms( not a word I know) and puts the sticks down, grabs the mike and tells the crowd why his life had recently changed for the better so dramatically.
He did not hold anything back. Talked about his
past and how he struggled so much with different issues and how he found peace and strength and meaning for the first time in life. Then he flat out lectured the crowd on WHY! we all play. He said is it because we love playing and interacting with others and do we use our gifts and music to bless others or are we in it to compete for the sake of competition only and are we forgetting about humility and becoming arrogant in our attitudes. He spoke with passion but it was not a lecture but an encouragement that came out of himself being humbled, realizing where he had been and where now he needed to go. MAN was the crowd stunned. I do not think Virg and Steve knew about his Faith because they had kind of a stunned look on their faces. There was actually a big roar from the crowd when he encouraged them (us) to reflect on why we play, hopefully for the right reasons.

Wow that's a great vinnie story.. I'm christian too, can't say i'm the model christian, but I try and am so thankful for the gifts i've been given. It's an enchouragement to see guys like vinnie and abe out there..

I've been playing drums for 27 years, and a Christian even longer, but only in the past few years did the two actually come together. Yes, I played all clubs in LA and stuff, but now I just play to praise God. (Praise team at church)

This past weekend, we had a Worship and Praise conference at our church. I hosted one workshop and was blessed to work with John Ferraro (Lary Carlton) and John Pena (incredible bassist) and they both shared how they use their faith to witness to fellow musicians in the secular world. Very inspiring, and humbling.

As Christians, we will always fail, but that does not mean our center and inspiration moves off of God. Gregg Bissonette is the same way. He says that whenever he plays, he is playing for God! People ALWAYS say what a nice guy GB is. Now you know why...

Wow! it's really nice that every one shared their faith... im from the province of Rizal (2hrs. drive from Manila) here in the Pi, Im involved in a Christian Band Ministry here.. i never realized until now that there are some christians here in HOD, it's so great you shared that vinnie story Digital man! I pray that every drummer here realize that every talent they have comes from God.. and He alone can bring it up to a higher level. Continue your ministry guys, it's much more rewarding to know that we play for a purpose and that we have HIM as our audience and master, coz with out him were nothing. [img]wink.gif[/img]

Good to hear that Pena is a Christian. And you too, guys.

John Pena is a really good bass player. I recently saw the Steve Lukather DVD (Los Lobotomys) with Pena, David Garfield and Simon Phillips. So good! Except for when Garfield picked up that synth axe...

I met Gregg B recently and he just could not have been nicer (never heard a bad word said about him). I know I've been critical of some guys, but just wanted to mention this in the interest of equal time.

I've heard the same thing about GB. He has always mentioned his faith in his clinics.
Alex Acuna is also a fantastic Christian guy. His enthusiastic attitude is infectious. He talked of his practice of praying ceaselessly and relating that to drum practice.(tapping out rhythms constantly while watching TV)
